One thing I really like about the iPad Mini is its diminutive notebook form factor – it’s perfect for using as an eBook reader, watching movies and most recently for taking notes in meetings. In regards to the latter, I found the iPad Mini screen keyboard impractical to use due to the small size of the keys, especially compared to the full-sized iPad. This is why when I spotted the Logitech iPad Mini Ultrathin Keyboard Cover with its full-sized alpha keys, I thought it would now make the iPad mini the perfect notebook-sized tool to take into meetings to take notes and to share ideas/concepts.

I think the best thing about it is the form-factor – its slim and minimalist design compliments Apple’s, almost perfectly. When you use it as a cover, only the Logitech logo gives it away as being a non-Apple gadget. Because it’s ultra thin and uses micro USB to charge the thin battery within, it’s considerably light. At 208 grams it’s only 1/3 the weight of the iPad mini. For travelers like myself, it makes even more sense to have an iPad Mini and the Logitech iPad Mini Ultrathin Keyboard Cover when effective travel philosophy is based around traveling light. With so many gadgets in my bag already, this was an excellent featherweight addition!

Whether you’re using it in landscape display mode or using it as a cover, the Logitech iPad Mini Ultrathin Cover holds the iPad Mini securely via strong solid magnets that attach to the left edge of the iPad. The grove that holds it for display can even bear the device in portrait view. Superb design Logitech!

I really like the keyboard and there is little where I can fault it. My favorite feature are the full-sized alpha keys which allows me to type at maximum speed (60-70 words per minute). I also appreciate the inclusion of the Apple Command buttons which allow me to perform many generic iPad functions like cut and past, copy and undo. Another keyboard function that I use quite a lot bulk text selection using the SHIFT, ALT and Arrow keys. There are also a myriad of functions you can perform using the FN and the number keys, such as activating Siri, search, opening photos and controling the music player.
How I would improve the Logitech iPad Mini Ultrathin Keyboard Cover
I would have given full marks if there was proper integration with iOS Mail – such as the ability to scroll through the list of emails and delete by pressing the delete button. I’m hoping that Logitech will consider these simple changes in a patch or app of some sort. I also question the placement of the Home key on the keyboard which I find I keep accidentally pressing when I try to hit the “1” or the “!” key.
Besides those two points, the Logitech iPad Mini Ultrathin Keyboard Cover is an amazing feat of engineering that every traveling wordsmith should own ! (See, I just pressed the Home key again with that “!”)
Oh and another cool feature that I discovered is that it’s 100% compatible with the iPhone. Which means it’s perfect to sit your iPad Mini and read while taking notes on the iPhone – awesome for studying and learning. I’m 30,000 feet in the air and have been doing this for the last hour as I prep for my Project Management Certification (Prince2). Students take note!
Overall would give it a 9/10 – absolutely recommend it!
